I must be getting my period any day now [you'd think i'd be getting better at tracking my period with this whole 365 days thing but not quite]... because let's see today, I:
-felt horribly depressed
-cried while cleaning at home
-ate too much food

Yep, that's a good sign.

Thus I got some of this inner angst out by... um... trying to out do Joker?

Steampunk Wizard Of Oz [16 Jul 2009|10:10pm]

steamfashion

[telcontar_ii]
This is only somewhat costume related, but I thought anyone in the vague vicinity of Santa Cruz might be interested to know that Cabrillo College is doing a steampunk Wizard Of Oz this summer. Apparently the idea of the look is to do Oz as L. Frank Baum might have seen it, which means it has a very Victorian sensibility. And the pictures I've seen look awesome!

Click the picture to see more press pictures and a bigger version of this one. The Flying Monkies in their top hats look great. And I really love the witch's wrap. Also, make sure to check out the hand poppies in that last picture.

Anyways, the show runs from July 17th through August 16th. I think tickets are $26. I know I'll be going, but not until after Comic Con. Anyone else interested?

Deletion of the Steam Panties Post [16 Jul 2009|10:42pm]

steamfashion

[tagancalera]
Sorry folks, I took down the previous post regarding the steam panties. We were all having a good discussion on the topic, however the model finally got around to seeing how bad a photographer I was and with the lighting and all even she agrees with some of you that her butt looks bad in the photo.

She reminds me that we'll have professional photos soon we can use and you can all see the item (and her much more properly pictured body) then.

My apologies for stemming the interesting discussions. More to come soon.

Some things on the user info you might find handy. [16 Jul 2009|10:22pm]

Stuff from the user info of this group that once in a bit we repost here as more and more of you keep jumping on the group , the more the better keep coming back and bring your pals!

This community was created for members such as yourself to share your take on what Steampunk fashion is. We are interested to see your creations, though this doesn't necessarily mean you must have sewn or created your attire; combining items into a well-coordinated outfit counts too.
What is steampunk?
Steampunk is the science fiction of the steam age, re-imagined with the advantage of modern hindsight. Drawing upon the wealth of historical technology and the scientific fantasies of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, steampunk seeks to reinvent modern wonders such as the computer as the people of the age might have envisioned them. Following in the footsteps of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, steampunk authors blend history, science and imagination into a world of wonder that might have been.
The Best rule of thumb : Have fun and be yourself. That's what this is about. Don't feel compelled to conform with everyone else. Don't feel shy about posting just because you don't want to dress like the other people who you've seen post. And don't post with the question "do you guys think this is steampunk enough?" Post with the statement "I feel that this is steampunk, and here is why I think so." At worst, someone will disagree and then the two of you can discuss your conflicting views, get to know each other, and come to an understanding; or, you can simply feel free to ignore them, and you have every right to do so if you don't feel like arguing over a simple difference of opinion.

Please keep posts regarding things that are other than fashion to a minimum. we, as the moderators, reserve the right to deny any posts we deem irrelevant to the community . Posts with multiple images are greatly loved, just make sure all large images are behind a cut.

The Rules to Steampunk Fashion

The "steam" in steampunk refers to the allusions to steam technology in the visual aesthetic shared by the community. The aesthetic is informed by visions of an era in which technological innovation continued with enhancements to already-existing centralized boiler-driven technology, perhaps circumventing internal combustion, plastics, and widespread electricity entirely. What that specifically translates to in each look is up to the interpreter's design, and can range from fully functional gadgets to simple allusion through historical reference to Victorian times.

The "punk" in steampunk is a reference to cyberpunk, because when steampunk first formed it was comprised essentially of cyberpunk (that is, dystopian high tech sci-fi) stories set during the Victorian period. The word punk is a very old English term that originally meant a prostitute, but which by the 20th century had evolved into a term meaning an outsider, a street person, or a ruffian (it's fairly clear why the punk rock subculture used this word to describe itself). There is clearly no link between the people of a steampunk setting and members of the punk subculture (simply because the environment that produced our modern "punks" did not exist during the steam age). For all practical purposes, the "punk" in steampunk is a cute turn of phrase used because it sounds interesting and exciting, without any deeper meaning than that.

Today I should probably fix my website. But I won't. [16 Jul 2009|12:27pm]

I wanted to go to [info]blackaire's reading last night, and I'd really like to go to [info]lisamantchev's reading tonight, but my website has been out of commission for like two months. (So has the state of my house.) I would really, really like to fix the things I've let lapse in favor of fiction.

Then again, my brain isn't really in shape to be plunging feverishly into a new project. I think it would be a distinctly poor idea to let myself grab handfuls of PHP and mold it into the castle of barely-W3C-regulated crap that I envision for my domain's new look and function. When I start coding, I forget to eat meals and I can't sleep properly for days at a time, which is the same as when I'm playing with a novel. I don't think my body can take another productivity binge so soon.

(For those of you that haven't looked at the splash page for my sleeping website lately, it's getting hilariously crowded with broken promises.)

What I really want to do is play Monkey Island until I fall asleep and then wake up and eat pie without utensils or a napkin and play more Monkey Island until I fall asleep, and then wake up and eat a nearly raw steak without utensils or a napkin... You get the idea.

Instead, I will make a to-do list... )

Sleep did not commence until 3:00 a.m. Yay. When I woke up this morning, it was this afternoon and I had a headache.

It's drizzling outside. Well, obviously, it's outside. If it were drizzling inside, we'd have a serious problem on our hands!

Time to eat lunch and take something for the pains in mah noggin.

AHAHAHA!!! [16 Jul 2009|01:48pm]

[ mood | ahahahaaa!!!! ]

I just received the best art critique of my life on a very old St. Sebastian painting:

">>My art history class inspired me to depict my favorite saints, and so the homoerotic Sebastian was first.<< What do you mean "homoerotic"?Good God man, have you no shame? I'm not even Catholic and I still respect the Saints and those who were martyred for Christ. Have you no shame? This artwork is nice, but your motive for drawing it is nothing short of lust, and lust is a sin which destroys down to Hell. God help you."

God help me indeed! And bless Deranged deviantArt commenters! I'm going to go write to him or her and thank him for it.

I can't stop staring at this dress. I'm wearing it right now, and it's so comfortable I could easily sleep in it.

This is just an introductory price, it hikes just a touch next week. Also in black if you prefer.

Steampunk Ball [16 Jul 2009|08:22am]

There is a convention this weekend in Jacksonville, Florida if anyone is interested. I hope to make it, but will just be day-tripping on Saturday if at all. AncientCityCon.com has all the info. There is a steampunk ball Saturday evening at a museum for a donation. I doubt I will make it to the ball as I'll have somebody watching the kids all day, but in case any locals get this, see ya there! I'll try to get pix, but I have a crappy cam.

humph! [16 Jul 2009|06:05pm]

Swedish news: some dude has the swine flu.

Earlier news: local health authorities say "everyone shall be vaccinated". My immediate reaction: "Not me! Nuh-uh! Compulsory? Then I don't want to be a part of it!"

Why have I become so contrary? When I was a kid I was always a model of Swedish go-along behaviour, albeit non-conforming as concerned fashion etc. Now I just feel like digging my heels in mulishly, crossing my arms and going "humph!" at all that sort of crap.

sweaty now [16 Jul 2009|05:28pm]

[ music | city silence (car engines and thumping feet) ]

Just now I've finally pulled my act together and done what I've meant to do for the last five months: clear out my cellar booth and clean away all that horrid concrete dust sprayed over everything. Guessing it would take a whole day to do, I've been putting off till vacation -- which is now.

So all week I've been doing other things -- Sunday was all "Torchwood", Monday I watched all of "The War Games" with commentaries, Tuesday I read Charlie Stross's latest and yesterday I started reading Russell T Davies's book on how he writes television and couldn't stop. Oh and I bought large plastic storage boxes, with lids, to keep cellar stuff in, in case someone decides to do another round of dirty work down there without telling anyone first.

Oof. It did take most of the day. And it was dirty and icky.

But! I did listen to Gareth David-Lloyd read "The Sin Eaters" while dusting like mad, and he's brilliant! What an impressionist! Too bad we haven't seen nearly enough of him in "Torchwood". Also Freema Agyeman reading "The Story of Martha" which was quite OK.

Now it's time to pay bills. When ppl ask me what I did on my vacation, boy will I have an exciting story to tell!
